I just finished wrapping this incredible Australian boulder opal in 14k gold-filled wire, and it’s one of those stones that really comes alive the moment it catches the light. From a distance it looks earthy and grounded, but tilt it slightly and you get brilliant flashes of green, electric blue, and even fiery red dancing across the surface.

Boulder opal is found in Queensland, Australia, where thin seams of opal form naturally within ironstone boulders. Instead of being cut away from its host rock, much of the ironstone is left intact, creating a stunning contrast between the dark natural matrix and the vivid opal “windows” inside. It gives each piece a raw, organic feel that you just don’t see in other opals.

Fun fact: Australia produces over 90% of the world’s boulder opal, and each seam of color is completely unique—meaning no two stones will ever show the same pattern or flash combination.
