I just finished wrapping this Mount St. Helens rhyolite in sterling silver, and it carries such a strong sense of place and history that you can feel it the moment you hold it. The stone has soft natural tones and subtle patterns formed by ancient volcanic activity, giving it an earthy, grounded beauty that pairs perfectly with the cool shine of sterling silver.
 
This rhyolite was collected around 1960, from the Mount St. Helens region in Washington, long before the famous 1980 eruption reshaped the mountain and permanently changed access to much of the surrounding landscape. Today, material from many areas within the blast zone and restricted zones is no longer available for collecting, which makes older, pre-eruption pieces like this increasingly meaningful to collectors and rockhounds.
 
Each wrap is done entirely by hand, shaped to follow the natural contours of the stone so no two pieces are ever alike. The sterling silver setting adds a clean, timeless frame that lets the history of the stone speak for itself.
 
Fun fact: Rhyolite is a volcanic rock formed from silica-rich lava that cools quickly, often preserving flow lines and subtle banding patterns that hint at the direction and movement of ancient eruptions.
