Pyrite suns form when iron sulfide crystallizes in flat, radiating patterns within shale or sedimentary rock. Over time, they can weather out as these natural disc-like formations, earning them the nickname “sun” because of their circular, ray-like structure. Paired with clear quartz, they take on a suspended, almost celestial look.
 
Pyrite suns are most famously found in Illinois, where they were formed in ancient marine environments over 300 million years ago—meaning each tiny “sun” is actually a snapshot of an ancient seabed frozen in mineral form.
